Toll Group is Australia’s largest freight distributor who recently invested $170 million in their latest internal communication network project. Centech Group assisted in the design and installation, with over 6000 meters of fibre optic cable that connects to twenty communication cabinets across the entire site.
Engaged in carrying out fibre and copper network installation on the BCS sortation systems, Centech implemented two multi-mode Profibus ring networks and a krone cat six copper network between the control cabinets and field devices. This network was tuned over 2,700 outlets, within the office space and across the warehouse.
Centech also delivered the security and CCTV installation works, with multiple access control panels across the facility and 500 cameras, utilised for safety, traffic management and the tracking of parcels throughout the facility.
In addition, Centech designed and installed a site safety signage system where safety bulletins were able to be published on the required screens.
Consulting with Toll’s national IT manager, Centech gathered the requirements and scope of the target solution.
Then followed the process of custom-designing communication cabinets that were created to suit the project’s specifications. Centech Group then put forward recommendations for AFC Fibre and Krone copper systems, backed by 20 and 25-year manufacturer warranty.
The project timeline saw Centech establish a site office with a lunchroom for our on-site staff and multiple shipping containers for product storage.
Centech were stationed on-site, full time for 16 months, with core staff and additional staff utilised during peak periods, as we approached project deadlines.
There were, as you can imagine, changes and problems that occurred, where a redesign or workaround was required, to keep the end goal on track. Having management based on site, along with the on-site supervisor, made these situations efficiently dealt with promptly.
Daily team meetings with all on-site staff ensured that all aspects of safety were always at the forefront of our daily activities. There were no significant incidents of injury during this project, and that comes down to the well educated and managed team on-site, lead by the Site Supervisor.
Overall the installation was delivered on time and met the entire process of Toll’s requirements.
This project was entered into the BCSI infrastructure installations awards, and successfully made it to the final round, but just missed out on the title.
